About Dr. Don Finn

As an adult and higher education specialist, Dr. Donald Finn provides effective adult instruction in a variety of settings across the nation. In 1992, while working as a middle and high school teacher, and with his first child on the way, Don began his adult education career. Looking for extra income, he answered an ad to teach in the adult night high school program in Montgomery County, Virginia. Quickly, this extra job grew into a passion and a career. Don pursued a masters degree in Curriculum and Instruction for Adult learners at Radford University. Upon completion of the degree, he was sought out by the director of the Virginia Adult Learning Resource Center (housed at Virginia Commonwealth University) in Richmond to fill an open position. Don accepted the Field Services Coordinator position where he developed and delivered workshops for adult education teachers and administrators, and provided leadership for projects and initiatives including print and Web-based publications. In 2002, he accepted a faculty position with the Rehabilitation Research and Training Center at VCU. In this position, he developed training workshops for university professors, conducted research, wrote manuscripts, and presented at conferences, he also taught classes for the VCU School of Education.

Don earned his Ph.D. in Adult Education and Organizational Development from VCU, his dissertation research focused on the effectiveness of delivering professional development across the Internet for college faculty. In 2006, he was awarded a position of Assistant Professor of Adult Education and Professional Development at Regent University in Virginia Beach, Virginia and he was promoted to Associate Professor in 2010. Drawing from his own education, professional, and life experiences, Don works with education leaders to develop and deliver effective and relevant professional learning experiences for adults in various settings.

Don is the current President of the Virginia Association for Adult & Continuing Education (VAACE.org) and is a member of the American Association for Adult & Continuing Education (AAACE.org), the Commission on Adult Basic Education (COABE.org), a reviewer for the International Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (ISETL.org/ijtlhe/) and has served as an adult Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superentindent, and on the Elder Board at his church.

He resides in Chesapeake, Virginia with his wife Laurie Ann, their children: Patrick, Allison, and Danielle and "Rosie" the Beagle.
